Chris Moneymaker rose to fame in the poker world when he won the 2003 WSOP main event for $2.5+ million. Chris Moneymaker drew attention to online poker when it was revealed that he won entry to the WSOP $10,000 buy in event from a online poker online $40 satellite. This amazing feat of turning $40 into $2.5 million caught the attention of vast numbers of amateur poker players who dreamed of becoming the next Moneymaker. The publicity put a major boom on the online poker scene which saw its numbers explode and consequently produced growth in the WSOP which peaked at the 2006 event paying out a grand prize of $12 million. The numbers of entries and prize money have since dropped down somewhat due to the antics of the US gov effectively banning online poker in the USA.
